| BISHOP PAUL OUTLINES PROCESS TO CALL A NEW DEAN AND RECTOR
The Rt. Rev. Paul V. Marshall joined the Vestry at
its October meeting to review the process for calling a new
dean and rector. Bishop Paul thanked Dean Lane for his
dedicated service to Nativity and for his significant leadership
role within the Diocese of Bethlehem.
As Bill Lane outlined in his letter to the parish
in July, he plans to take vacation during the month of
August, 2005 and begin an earned sabbatical. On January 1,
2006, he will officially retire as our dean and rector. For
many on the Vestry, the calling of a new dean and rector will
be a new experience while others are veterans having been
through the process either here at the cathedral or in other
parish churches.
Search Process Overview
The first task will be to form a committee to
celebrate Bill Lane’s ministry among us during his nine years
at Nativity. The Retirement Celebration Committee will
be named shortly and charged with planning events to
commemorate Bill’s ministry not only at the cathedral
but also to honor his leadership within the Diocese of
Bethlehem.
In his comments, Bishop Paul strongly advised the
vestry to follow established search protocol. As such, the
formal search process does not begin until the incumbent
leaves the position and fully relinquishes priestly duties.
In our case, this will be August 1, 2005. After that date, two
committees will be formed and begin their work. The first
will be a Parish Profile Committee and the other will be
the Search Committee.
Profile Committee
The profile committee has been formed and
will have it's first meeting early in June. A goal in the
choosing of this group is that it would represent the various
ages and stages of our parish. With that in mind
please feel free to call any of us with your input, comments
and suggestions. We have listed our phone numbers and
e-mail addresses with our names to make feedback easy,
but feel free to use the old fashioned way and talk to us on
Sundays. The discussions and thoughts we receive now and
throughout the summer will be a huge help in the survey that
we form and send out in the early fall. Thanks in advance
for your help.--P. Bayliss
The Search Committee will be comprised of two
vestry persons and a representative sampling of others from
our parish family. If asked, Bishop Paul indicated he would
name a diocesan representative to be a committee member.
Since Nativity is a cathedral church, naming a diocesan
representative is appropriate.
Search Process will Take a Minimum of Nine Months
It is the vestry’s intent to move the search process
forward as quickly as possible consistent with thoroughness
and due diligence. Once the position is vacant, it is our hope
to call someone within nine months of beginning the search
process.
